Pilates At Capital Fitness

You’ve probably heard of Pilates by now. Maybe you’ve read about a TV star who swears by Pilates or a sports team who uses Pilates Reformers to train in the off-season. You know it’s good for core strength, posture and breath. You’ve heard it helps with back and neck pain. Yet, you may still be uncertain about what Pilates actually is. That’s because Pilates is incredibly unique as an exercise system and the only way to really understand Pilates is to try it. Try out our Pilates studio at Capital Fitness where we offer exceptional private training and mat classes taught by our certified instructors.

Schedule a free orientation with one of our instructors who will help you set up a Pilates program that fits your needs and budget. Whether you start with a free mat class, or an individualized private session, you’ll walk out feeling stronger, standing taller and breathing better. Please see the group fitness schedule for all of the pilates mat classes that are included with your Capital Fitness membership.

Pilates Private Training

Private training offers an opportunity to identify and explore your individual needs. Private sessions are beneficial for learning the basics (if you are new to Pilates), refining your strength and alignment, rehabilitating injuries and/or learning methods of alleviating chronic pain. They are also perfect for someone with a busy schedule who can’t always make a class. Sessions are 50-60 minutes and include exercises on the Reformer, Cadillac, Low Chair, and Mat.

WHAT IS YOGA?

To many, the idea of yoga is just stretching. While stretching is involved, yoga is about creating a balance in the body. By practicing yoga you’ll develop strength and flexibility by performing poses or postures; each of which has specific physical benefits.Poses are done quickly in succession to create heat in the body through movement (Vinyasa-style) or more slowly to increase stamina, perfecting the alignment of the pose. While poses are a constant, the approach to each varies depending on the tradition in which instructors are trained.

Here at Capital Fitness Yoga, each of our instructors is certified. We offer a variety of different styles such as Vinyasa, Hatha, Forrest, Kundalini, Power and Restorative. While each style is unique we suggest you try each style finding out the differences of each.

Are There Benefits?

The benefits of yoga are many. While everyone will feel something different, here is just a sample of what youc can expect from adding yoga to your workout routine.

Flexibility
If you have tight muscles, stretching the body in new ways will help it become flexible, allowing a greater range of motion to muscles and joints. Over time, you might see more flexibility in your hamstrings, back, shoulders, hips and more.

Strength
Certain yoga poses require the support of your own body weight. This could include balancing on one leg (Tree Pose) or supporting yourself with your arms (Downward Facing Dog). Some exercises require moving slowly in and out of poses, this can increase strength.

Muscle Tone
As you get stronger, you may increase your chance of toning your muscles as well. Through yoga you can help shape lean and long muscles.

Pain Prevention
Do you spend many hours sitting at a computer? Do you drive long distances, spending too much time in a car? These activities and more cause tightness and spinal compression leading to back pain many of us experience. Through yoga you can improve your alignment; this could lead to other types of pain prevention.

Breathe Better
Have you ever given any thought to how you breathe? Yoga breathing exercises or Pranayama focus the attention on the breath and teach how to better use the lungs. Better breathing will benefit you both in and out of class. Potential benefits include clearing nasal passages or calming the central nervous system.

Mental Calmness
Concentrating intently on what your body is doing can have the effect of bringing calmness to the mind. With yoga you’ll be introduced to meditation techniques which help clear the mind.
